Inspiration & Story

Veritas Lunare belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

This one is pure whimsygoth. Not the cold, architectural kind of dark. The warm kind. Herbs hanging upside down in a kitchen that smells like rosemary. Velvet that has seen things. A tarot deck you have shuffled so many times the edges went soft. Candles burning in the afternoon for no reason at all. That specific late-90s witch feeling where magic was cosy and domestic and shared between women, and nobody had to explain themselves about it.

The name is Latin: veritas is truth, lunare is of the moon. Because the moon has been hanging there through every version of you. The best year of your life and the absolute worst one. She was there for both and she is not keeping score.

Her face is sculpted, not stamped, eyes half open, expression somewhere between serene and mildly amused. We blackened the recesses and polished the high points back up so she actually reads as a face across a room instead of flattening into a silhouette. The little star hangs loose from the tip of the crescent and swings when you move, carrying the gemstone low so it catches light as you walk. She is never completely still, which is the point.

Because this pendant is Made to Order, the gemstone is personisable. The example wears white sapphire, cold and clear and very lunar. A garnet makes her far moodier. A peridot pulls her green and overgrown, straight into herb-garden territory. An amethyst is the full 90s crystal-shop fantasy. Same moon, completely different creature.

Everything is made in our own atelier in the Netherlands, in real recycled 925 sterling silver. No plating, no filled, no vermeil. Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Every moon is finished by hand, with the face darkened and the high points brought back up so the features hold their depth instead of flattening out.

She is small enough to live on you every day and reads clearly from across a room, which makes her a proper layering piece. Whimsygoth styling is maximal by nature, so pile her on. A shorter chain over a longer pendant, mixed with a locket and something you inherited and something you found in a bin at a market. Nothing needs to match. Against black velvet or a thrifted coat, the blackened detail in her face really shows.

What does a crescent moon necklace symbolise?
The crescent moon is usually read as change, cycles and intuition. It is the moon caught mid-transformation rather than at her fullest, which is why people tend to reach for it during periods of becoming something. Add a star and you get the older reading: guidance through the dark.

What does the moon face mean in jewelry?
The man in the moon, or moon face, became hugely popular in Victorian celestial jewelry in the late nineteenth century. A face turns the moon from a symbol into a companion. She watches, she keeps you company, she does not comment.

Can I choose a different gemstone?
Yes. The white sapphire shown is the example, not the only option. Pick your stone at checkout. Different stones change the entire mood of the piece, so take your time.

Is white sapphire a real gemstone?
Yes. White sapphire is corundum, the same mineral family as blue sapphire, just without the colouring elements. It reads clear and bright with a softer sparkle than diamond, and it scores a 9 on the Mohs scale, so it stands up well to daily wear.

Does the necklace chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately.

Can this pendant be made in a bigger size?
No, this one stays at 31 x 17 mm. The moon and the hanging star are proportioned to each other and scaling them up loses the balance. If you want something larger, our other made to order pendants do offer alternative sizing.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. It is a normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On this piece the darkened recesses are intentional, so light tarnish tends to look good on her. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without scrubbing out the blackening.

Is sterling silver safe for sensitive skin?
For most people, yes. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver alloyed with copper, and it is nickel free, which is the usual culprit for reactions. If you react to almost every metal, gold is the safer route.

How long does a made to order piece take?
Between 8 and 12 weeks. She is cast, set, blackened and finished specifically for you after you order, by two people, by hand.

What is whimsygoth?
Whimsygoth (also spelled whimsigoth) is the warmer, more romantic branch of gothic style. Think 90s witch: velvet, layered silver, moons and stars, tarot, herbs, crystals and a general refusal to tidy up.
