Inspiration & Story

Midnight Margarita belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

She is named for the kind of night you already know about. Kitchen table, too late, nobody sober, everybody honest. Someone's crisis being solved by a group of women who show up without being asked. That is the actual heart of whimsygoth: not the spooky bit, the warm bit. Herbs above the sink, candles lit in the afternoon, a tarot deck worn soft at the corners, and a group of people who would burn something down for you.

The design is a toi et moi, the old two-stone setting that reads as you and me. Here it is two moons instead. They are opposite each other across the band, each with a sculpted face, eyes half open, expressions somewhere between serene and mildly amused. They are the same moons that hang on our Veritas Lunare pendant, so this ring quietly belongs to that whole family.

Between them sits a baguette cut gemstone, set upright in prongs. A baguette is a long rectangular step cut, which behaves completely differently from a brilliant. Instead of throwing scattered sparkle it gives you flashes of clean colour, like light coming through old glass. On a dark stone that reads deep and liquid. It is a cut you see constantly in Art Deco jewelry and almost never in mainstream engagement rings, and it is a large part of why this ring does not look like everybody else's.

We blackened the recesses of both moons and polished the high points back up by hand. That is what lets two faces this small still read as faces from a normal talking distance instead of collapsing into blobs.

Because this ring is Made to Order, it is available in every ring size and the gemstone is personisable. The examples wear amethyst and synthetic blue sapphire, and the two look like different rings entirely. Amethyst is soft, purple and dusky, the full 90s crystal-shop fantasy. Blue sapphire is deep and cold and goes properly Art Deco. Choose a garnet and she turns bloody and romantic. There is no wrong answer here, which is rather the point.

If you are looking at this as a proposal ring, read engagement rings without rules first. There is no law requiring a diamond, and there never was. Everything is made in our own atelier in the Netherlands, in real recycled 925 sterling silver. No plating, no filled, no vermeil. Both moons are finished by hand, faces darkened and high points brought back up, and every prong is closed over the stone at the bench by us.

The two moons make her wide across the finger and low in profile, so she sits flat and does not catch on jumper sleeves the way a raised solitaire does. That also makes her a proper stacking ring. Put a plain band either side and the moons frame it. Wear her alone and the whole thing reads as one small piece of night sky.

Questions & Answers

Can this be used as an engagement ring?
Yes, and plenty of people do. There is no rule saying an engagement ring has to be a diamond solitaire in white gold. That idea is younger than most people assume and it came from advertising. We wrote about it in engagement rings without rules.

Is amethyst hard enough for an engagement ring?
Here is the honest answer. Amethyst sits at 7 on the Mohs scale. That is fine for a ring you wear regularly, but an engagement ring is worn every single day for decades, and over that timeframe amethyst will pick up fine surface scuffs on the table facet. It can be repolished. If you want the toughest option in this design, sapphire is a 9 and will simply outlast you. If you love amethyst, wear amethyst, just know what you are choosing.

What is a baguette cut gemstone?
A long rectangular step cut, with straight parallel facets instead of the scattered triangular ones on a brilliant. It gives clean flashes of colour rather than fireworks, which is why it reads sophisticated rather than sparkly. It is a signature of Art Deco jewelry.

What does toi et moi mean?
French for you and me. It is a classic two-stone setting where two elements sit side by side on the band, meant to represent two people. Here the two elements are moons.

Can I choose a different gemstone?
Yes. Amethyst and synthetic blue sapphire are shown as examples. Pick your stone at checkout. The stone changes the entire personality of the ring, so take your time with it.

What is a synthetic sapphire?
It is real sapphire, grown in a lab instead of in the ground. Chemically and physically it is identical to mined sapphire, same hardness, same optical behaviour. The differences are price and origin, not quality. We always label our stones as genuine or synthetic so you know exactly what you are buying.

What ring sizes do you make?
All of them. Every made to order ring is made to your size, so there is no size range to fall outside of and no upcharge for being at either end.

How do I find my ring size?
Our size guide walks you through it, and this ring is wide across the finger, which can affect fit. If you are between sizes, message us before ordering and we will help you decide.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. It is a normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. The darkened recesses on the moons are intentional, so light tarnish tends to suit this ring. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without scrubbing out the blackening.

Can this ring be made in gold?
Yes. We work in 14K and 18K gold as well as sterling silver, and for a piece someone plans to wear daily for fifty years that is worth a conversation. Message us and we will quote it.

Is there a matching piece?

How long does a made to order piece take?
