Inspiration & Story
The Shieldmaiden belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.
She is modelled on the couter, the most quietly impressive part of a suit of armour. A couter covers the elbow, and an elbow is the hardest problem an armourer faces. A breastplate only has to be strong. A couter has to be strong and let the joint bend fully, without gapping open at exactly the wrong moment. The answer was overlapping plates, curved and layered so they slide across each other as the arm moves. That is what you are wearing: layered bands with a raised central ridge, blackened down in the grooves and polished back across the high points so the plates read as separate rather than merging into one lump of silver.
Set into that armour is a lab grown diamond, and the combination is the whole idea. Armour is the hardest thing a person could wear. Diamond is the hardest natural material there is, a 10 on the Mohs scale, the top of the scale, scratched by nothing except another diamond. Protection built around the most durable thing we could put in it.
A lab grown diamond is real diamond. Same crystal structure, same carbon, same hardness, same optical behaviour, grown in a controlled environment rather than pulled out of the ground. It is not a simulant and it is not zirconia. The difference is origin and price, not what it is. We label it as lab grown every time, because that is a material fact and you should know it.
She was named for the shieldmaiden, which is a figure that has done a lot of heavy lifting in fantasy fiction and considerably less in the historical record than the internet insists. The evidence for women fighting in Norse warfare is genuinely debated, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise. Why only a lab diamond, and what to do if you want something else
Short version: the stone is an unusual size, and our wholesaler does not stock that size in other gemstones. Not a design decision, a supply one. So rather than list options we cannot reliably deliver, we list the one we can.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.
The diamond is set at the bench by us. The blackening is worked down into the grooves between the plates and polished back off the raised ridges by hand, which is the only thing that makes layered armour read as layers rather than as one solid mass.

Is it comfortable for everyday wear?
Yes. The profile is low, the stone is set into the armour rather than standing above it, and there is nothing raised to snag on clothing.
Will the blackening wear off?
The blackening sits down in the grooves between the plates where nothing rubs, so it is durable. Raised ridges will brighten over years of wear, which most people prefer, since the contrast that develops belongs to you. We can reset it if you ever want it back to new.
Can this ring be made in gold?
Yes. We work in 14K and 18K as well as sterling silver, and for a ring somebody plans to wear every day for fifty years that conversation is genuinely worth having. Message us and we will quote it.
Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On layered armour a little tarnish in the grooves genuinely improves the contrast. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it.
