Inspiration & Story
The Knight belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.
She is modelled on the couter, and that is worth knowing about, because it is the most quietly impressive part of a suit of armour. A couter is the plate that covers the elbow, and an elbow is the hardest problem an armourer faces. A breastplate only has to be strong. A couter has to be strong and let the joint bend fully, in both directions, without gapping open at exactly the moment someone is trying to put something through it. The answer was overlapping plates, curved and layered so they slide across each other as the arm moves.
That is what you are wearing. Layered bands with a raised central ridge, tapering to a point at the front, blackened down in the grooves and polished back across the high points so the plates read as separate rather than merging into one. The layering is the design, and it comes straight off the original solution.
A ring that protects a moving joint is a reasonable thing to put on a finger, and it is why people keep asking us for this one as a wedding band. Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, blackening and polishing.
The blackening is worked down into the grooves between the plates and polished back off the raised ridges by hand, which is the only thing that makes layered armour read as layers rather than as one lump of silver. Every ring is finished individually.

What is a couter?
The plate that protects the elbow on a suit of armour. It is one of the hardest pieces to make, because it has to be strong and still let the joint bend fully without opening a gap. The solution was overlapping curved plates that slide across each other as the arm moves, which is exactly the layering you can see on this ring.
Why is an elbow harder to armour than a chest?
Because a chest only has to be protected. An elbow has to be protected and still work. Any rigid plate that covers a joint stops it bending, so armourers built up layers that move against each other, keeping coverage through the whole range of motion.

Is it comfortable for everyday wear?
Yes, and it is one of the better rings we make for that. The profile is low, there is no setting to catch on clothing, and there is no stone to worry about knocking.
Will the blackening wear off?
The blackening sits down in the grooves between the plates where nothing rubs, so it is durable. Raised ridges will brighten over years of wear, which most people prefer, since the contrast that develops belongs to you. We can reset it if you ever want it back to new.
Can this ring be made in gold?
Yes. We work in 14K and 18K as well as sterling silver, and for a wedding band somebody intends to wear every day for fifty years that conversation is worth having. Message us and we will quote it.
Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On layered armour a little tarnish in the grooves genuinely improves the contrast, because contrast is what makes the plates read. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it.
How long does a made to order piece take?
Between 8 and 12 weeks. She is cast, shaped, blackened and finished specifically for you after you order, by two people, by hand.
