Two garnets, set where the windows are. A halberd in recycled sterling silver with a gothic axe head, a rear spike, a top spike and a twisted haft, with a garnet held in each quatrefoil opening. There is one of her, and she will not be made again this way. The version without stones exists as a made to order creation.

Inspiration & Story

Hasta Mortis belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.

The name is Latin: hasta is a spear or shafted weapon, mortis is of death. Spear of death, which is a considerably heavier name than her sister carries. The plain version of this halberd is called Custos Noctis, guardian of the night, and that one belongs to the person standing at the door. This one, with blood in the blade, is what happens when the guard stops guarding.

A halberd is genuinely three weapons welded onto one pole, which is why it dominated European infantry for two centuries. An axe blade to cut, a spike on the reverse to punch through plate armour, and a spear point on top to hold cavalry at distance. One person could deal with an armoured rider, an infantryman and a wall of horses with the same tool. It is a brutally practical object and there is nothing decorative about the reasoning behind it.

Ours is decorated anyway, and this version takes it further. The axe head carries quatrefoils, the four-lobed shape lifted from gothic window tracery, and on the plain halberd those are pierced right through as openings. Here they are filled with garnets. So the stones are not ornament stuck onto a weapon. They sit in the windows, and the axe head reads like a cathedral window with the light behind it turned red.

Garnet is the right stone for that and not only because of the colour. It does not sit bright. It runs deep, still and slightly black at the edges, then catches a lamp and goes properly red, lit from inside rather than reflecting off the top. Exactly like old glass rather than new. It is also the stone that appears most often in genuine antique mourning jewelry, so a weapon called spear of death wearing garnets is a coherent object rather than a coincidence.

The haft is twisted and banded, blackened down in the grooves and polished back on the high points so it reads as gripped and used, and the edges of the head are finished with small trefoil finials like the top of a spire.

One honest adjustment, same as on her sister. A real halberd's haft runs to around two metres, and at that proportion this pendant would hang absurdly long and sit badly. We shortened it deliberately so the head keeps its presence and the whole thing wears comfortably. If you check proportions against reference plates, you were going to notice, and we would rather tell you.

This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. The version without gemstones, Custos Noctis, is available as a made to order creation in 8 to 12 weeks.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, piercing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Both garnets were set at the bench by us, seated into openings that were pierced right through the axe head, which means the prongs had to close over each stone cleanly with the metal around them already open. The blackening was worked into the twist of the haft and the recesses of the tracery and polished back across the raised surfaces.

She hangs as a long vertical with a broad head, so she draws a line down the chest rather than sitting as a shape. That makes her surprisingly easy to wear for something this specific: she lengthens a neckline instead of filling it and sits flat under a collar.

The two garnets change how she works in a stack. Where the plain halberd is entirely metal and slips into anything, this one brings red with her, so she pairs deliberately with deep red, black and warm metals rather than disappearing into a silver pile. Garnet also holds its colour under warm indoor light, which is where most people actually see a pendant.

Why garnet?
Colour and lineage. Garnet runs deep and slightly black at the edges and only comes alive under warm light, which is exactly how old red glass behaves. It is also the stone that appears most often in genuine antique mourning jewelry, which suits a weapon called spear of death.

Is garnet hard enough for a pendant?
Garnet sits around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is fine. A pendant has a far easier life than a ring, since it is not being knocked against door frames and keyboards all day.

Can I get this one with different stones?
Not this one, she is finished as shown. The made to order version is made without gemstones. If you want a halberd built to your own specification, that is what our Custom Realm is for.

Were medieval weapons really decorated like this?
Yes. Ceremonial and parade arms were routinely pierced, etched and engraved, because a weapon carried on guard duty was also a statement about the household or city it served. Gothic decoration on a halberd is historically grounded rather than invented.

Is this suitable for a renfaire, LARP or fantasy convention?
It was largely made for exactly that. She reads clearly from a distance and survives a full day out. Garnet is durable enough not to worry about.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On this piece it genuinely helps, since the whole point is a weapon that looks used rather than showroom fresh. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without polishing the wear out of the haft, and a soft brush reaches around the settings where a cloth cannot.
