Inspiration & Story

Morgenstern belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.

The name is the real one. Morgenstern is the German and Dutch word for a morning star, and that is genuinely what this weapon was called: a spiked head named after the last star before dawn. Medieval weapon naming was rarely subtle and frequently beautiful.

A note for the people who will check, and we know you are out there. Strictly, a morning star is a spiked head on a rigid shaft and a spiked head on a chain is a flail. The two terms have been blurred for centuries, in period sources as much as modern ones. Ours has a chain, so it is a flail by the strict reading and a morgenstern by the one everybody actually uses.

This one takes the name literally. There are three amethysts set into the head, sitting between the spikes where light finds them, so the morning star has actual points of light in it. And on the reverse of the haft there is a star, cut into the metal by hand.

That star is the best thing about her, and almost nobody will ever see it. It faces your chest. It is on the side that lies against you, which is exactly where medieval and Victorian jewellers put the things that mattered: inscriptions inside rings, hair behind lockets, marks meant for one person rather than a room. Hand engraving is also the one process on our bench with no second attempt. A graver removes metal, and metal does not come back. A wandering line stays wandering. That star had to be right the first time, on a curved surface, at that scale.

The haft is banded and worn, textured like something gripped and used rather than kept polished on a wall, with the blackening down in the bands so the wear reads honestly. The head swings loose below it and moves as you walk.

This is a piece for people who like their heroines armed. Romantasy is full of women who fight, and the jewelry has mostly not caught up: plenty of swords, very little else. A flail is a different character altogether. Not elegant, not a duelling weapon, carried by people who needed to get through armour rather than look impressive doing it.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, hand engraving, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

The star on the reverse was cut into the metal with a graver, on a curved surface, with no second attempt available. Each amethyst was seated into the head at the bench, and every link is soldered closed rather than left open, which is the difference between a moving pendant that lasts and one that comes apart on a coat zip.

Amethyst sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, which is fine. A pendant has a much easier life than a ring, since it is not being knocked against door frames and keyboards all day, and these stones sit down between the spikes where the silver protects them.

Does amethyst fade in sunlight?
It can, over long exposure. Amethyst will pale if left in strong direct sun for extended periods. Very slow, and normal wear outdoors will not do it. Do not store her on a sunny windowsill.

Are the moving parts fragile?
No, but treat them as the small mechanism they are. Every link is soldered closed rather than left open, which is the usual failure point on inexpensive chain jewelry. Take her off before sleeping and before pulling clothing over your head at speed.

Were flails actually used in medieval warfare?
