Handcrafted Medieval Flail Pendant in Recycled Sterling Silver | Made to Order

Handcrafted made to order flail pendant in recycled sterling silver, with a banded haft and a spiked head that swings freely on its own chain. A knightcore weapon in miniature, for readers who prefer their heroines armed.

The Essence

A weapon named after a star.
It swings when you move.
For the ones who fight back.

Inspiration & Story

Morgenstern belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.

The name is the real one. Morgenstern is the German and Dutch word for a morning star, and that is genuinely what this weapon was called: a spiked head named after the last star before dawn. Medieval weapon naming was rarely subtle and frequently beautiful.

A note for the people who will check, and we know you are out there. Strictly, a morning star is a spiked head on a rigid shaft, and a spiked head on a chain is a flail. The two terms have been used interchangeably for centuries, in period sources as well as modern ones, and the distinction is far less tidy than the internet insists. Ours has a chain, so it is a flail by the strict reading and a morgenstern by the one everybody actually uses.

The haft is banded and worn, textured like something that has been gripped and used rather than kept polished on a wall, and the blackening sits down in the bands so the wear reads honestly. From its base hangs a chain, and from that the spiked head, which swings loose and moves as you walk. That movement is the whole point. A flail pendant that does not swing is just a decoration of one.

This is a piece for people who like their heroines with a weapon in hand. Romantasy has spent the last few years full of women who fight, and the jewelry has mostly not caught up: plenty of swords, very little of anything else. A flail is a different character entirely. It is not elegant, it is not a duelling weapon, and it was carried by people who needed to get through armour rather than look impressive doing it.

Everything is made in our own atelier in the Netherlands, in real recycled 925 sterling silver. No plating, no filled, no vermeil. If you want the honest breakdown of what those words mean and what the cheap versions look like after six months, we wrote solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated, and there is a guide on how to spot genuinely ethically made handcrafted jewelry if you want to get good at reading listings. If you want the wider case for why readers wear their books, bookish jewelry, why romantasy readers wear their stories is the one.

Perfect for lovers of knightcore and medieval revival, romantasy and bookish jewelry, fantasy and RPG aesthetics, weapon jewelry, renfaire and castle festivals, and handmade sterling silver jewelry.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, blackening and polishing.

The head, chain and haft are assembled by hand and every link is soldered closed rather than left open, which is the difference between a moving pendant that lasts and one that comes apart on a coat zip. The blackening is worked into the banding and the wear texture and polished back across the high points, which is what makes a small haft look like a used one.

Style & Wear

A knightcore weapon for medieval revival, romantasy and fantasy baddies.

She hangs as a long vertical line with the head swinging below, so she lengthens a neckline rather than filling it. She looks best with room to move, on a longer chain where the head can actually swing, and she reads beautifully against a high neckline, a linen shirt or anything with a collar.

Because she has no stone, she is entirely metal, which makes her one of the easiest pieces to layer. She will not fight a coloured pendant next to her.

Perfect for renfaires and castle festivals, romantasy fairs, a book release you queued for, and every day you would rather be armed.

Questions & Answers

What does Morgenstern mean?
It is the German and Dutch word for morning star, and it is the actual historical name for this weapon. The spiked head was named after the last star before dawn.

Is this a morning star or a flail?
Both names get used, and we would rather explain than pick a side. Strictly, a morning star is a spiked head on a rigid shaft and a spiked head on a chain is a flail. In practice the terms have been blurred for centuries, in period sources as much as modern ones. Ours has a chain, so it is a flail by the strict definition and a morgenstern by common usage.

Does the head actually swing?
Yes. It hangs on its own chain and moves freely as you walk. It is the reason the piece exists, and it is also the reason the dimensions are fixed, since the proportions are what make it swing properly rather than hanging stiff.

Can I choose a gemstone for it?
No. This creation has no stone. It is made entirely in recycled sterling silver, which suits it, since a weapon does not need decorating.

Can it be made bigger or smaller?
No. The haft, chain and head are proportioned to each other, and changing the scale would ruin how it hangs and moves.

Are the moving parts fragile?
No, but treat them as the small mechanism they are. Every link is soldered closed rather than left open, which is the usual failure point on inexpensive chain jewelry. Take her off before sleeping and before pulling clothing over your head at speed.

Were flails actually used in medieval warfare?
Yes, though far less commonly than films suggest, and their prevalence is genuinely debated among historians. What is not debated is why they existed: a weighted head delivers force through armour in a way a blade cannot.

Is this suitable for a renfaire or a fantasy convention?
It was largely made for exactly that. She reads clearly from a distance, she moves as you walk, and she survives a full day out far better than anything with a stone in it.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately, and we would suggest a longer one so the head has room to swing.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On this piece it genuinely helps, since the whole point is a weapon that looks used rather than showroom fresh. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without polishing the wear out of the haft.

How long does a made to order piece take?
Between 8 and 12 weeks. She is cast, assembled and finished specifically for you after you order, by two people, by hand.
