Inspiration & Story

Memorare Cathedrale belongs to Regina, our cathedralcore collection: gothic architecture, arches, tracery and the particular grandeur of buildings designed to make you look up. She is the most complex piece we have made in this collection.

She is a triptych, and that word matters. A triptych is a three-panel altarpiece with two hinged wings that fold across a central panel. It is one of the great forms of medieval and Renaissance religious art, and the hinges were never decorative. Most triptychs stayed closed through the ordinary weeks of the year, showing only their plain outer faces, and were opened for feast days and holy days. The opening was the event. What was inside was not meant to be looked at constantly, which is precisely what made it worth looking at.

She works exactly the same way. Closed, she is a slim gothic spire, 16 mm across, with quatrefoils and an ogee arch worked across the outer doors, blackened into the recesses so the tracery reads. That is her ordinary face. Open, she spreads to 29 mm and the whole thing changes: two doors swung wide, the arched tracery panel standing behind, and the space beneath it holding whatever you have put there.

Memorare is Latin for remember. And that is the function underneath the architecture: this is a locket, in the oldest sense of the word. Somewhere to keep something. A photograph, a card, a pressed flower, a scrap of handwriting, a memento mori print like the one shown. The crystallised glass covers and protects it, the way Georgian and Victorian jewellers laid crystal over hairwork and miniatures in mourning pieces, using the stone as lens and lid at once. She also does not have to be worn. Standing open on a shelf she is a reliquary frame, which is a genuinely good option for a photograph that deserves better than a fridge magnet, and for the sort of person whose house is a collection rather than décor. Wear her Thursday and put her back on the shelf Friday.

She has two working hinges. A hinge is not a decorative element, it is a mechanism. Each knuckle has to be cut, rolled, aligned and pinned so the door swings true and, harder, so it closes true. A hinge that is a fraction out is a door that gapes, and there is no hiding it. Both doors have to meet each other cleanly along the centre line while sitting inside an arched outline that is not square anywhere.

She is a box, not a plate. She has an inside, a depth, a seat for the glass and an outer face that all have to work together. That is a fundamentally different build from a flat pendant, and it takes multiple days rather than hours.

Not a status object, not an investment. A more difficult thing that took considerably longer to make.

This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. Another hinged piece may appear one day, but not this one.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, hinge making and fitting, glass setting, blackening and polishing.

The hinges are the work. Each knuckle was cut, fitted, aligned and pinned by hand so both doors swing freely and close flush against each other along the centre line, inside an arched outline with no square edges to measure from. The tracery on the outer doors was blackened into its recesses and polished back across the raised surfaces.

Closed, she is 16 mm wide and reads as a narrow gothic spire, surprisingly wearable for something this heavy, and quiet enough to go somewhere that does not want explaining. Open, she is 29 mm wide and becomes a small carried shrine, which is a genuinely unusual thing to wear and will be noticed.

At 19.21 g she needs a chain with real body to it. A fine chain will not carry her comfortably or safely, and we would recommend a heavier one than you would normally reach for.

She wants to hang alone. This is not a layering piece.

And she does not have to be worn at all. Standing open on a shelf she is a frame for something that matters, which makes her a good piece for someone who is not sure they want to wear their grief or their memory in public every day. Wear her on the days you want to. Put her back on the shelf on the days you do not.

What makes a hinge difficult?
Tolerance. A hinge that is slightly out swings fine and closes badly, and a door that does not sit flush is visible immediately. Here both doors also have to meet each other cleanly along the centre line inside an arched outline with no straight edges to reference. There is no way to hide an error.

Latin for remember. It is the word this whole piece is built around, since her purpose is to hold something you do not want to forget.

Is this a locket?
Yes, in the oldest sense: a small container worn on the body to keep something. Most modern lockets open on a single hinge. This one opens on two, in the form of an altarpiece.

Is putting glass over a keepsake historically accurate?
Very. Georgian and Victorian jewellers set crystal or glass over hairwork, painted miniatures and photographs in mourning and memorial jewelry, using it as both lens and protective lid.

How heavy is 19.21 g to wear?
Noticeably substantial. She needs a chain with genuine body to it, heavier than you would normally choose, both for comfort and because a fine chain is not a safe carrier for this weight.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately, and for this creation we would strongly recommend a heavier chain.

How do I look after the hinges?
Open and close her deliberately rather than quickly, and never force a door. Keep the mechanism dry, so take her off before swimming or showering. If she ever stiffens, send her back to us rather than working oil into her.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a piece this architectural, tarnish in the recesses genuinely improves the contrast. Clean around the hinges with a soft brush rather than a cloth, and avoid dip cleaners entirely, since liquid gets into a mechanism and does not come out.
