Inspiration & Story

The Evergreen Bone belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

She is two things at once, which is the entire point. The bone is the honest part, the fact underneath everything, the thing that is true whether or not you are ready for it. The laurel is the everlasting part. Laurel is evergreen. It does not turn brown in October and drop, which is precisely why it ended up carved on so many Victorian gravestones, standing for memory that does not fade with the season. Wound together, they say the plain thing: this ended, and what you remember of it does not.

Laurel has been carrying that meaning for a very long time. The Greeks and Romans crowned victors with it, sacred to Apollo, and a wreath of it is still the shape we reach for when we mean something achieved and kept. In funerary use it turned quieter: not triumph, but permanence. The leaves that stay green.

The bone is sculpted and blackened into its texture, slim and slightly irregular the way a real one is, and the laurel winds up its length with each leaf finished by hand. From the end hangs a faceted oval sapphire in a hand-formed bezel, formed around its own stone rather than cast to a standard size. It swings as you move, so the whole piece has a slow drift to it. This is also why these are one of a kind: bezels made to their own stones and links built at the bench cannot be repeated identically.

Memento mori was never only about death. It was about noticing that you are alive, and this is the version of it that says so most gently. These are One of a Kind creations. There are two of them and they will not be made again in this form. Something related may appear one day, a different bone, a different stone, hung a different way, but not this.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, bezel forming, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Significant benchwork went into these. Each bezel was formed around its own sapphire, the hanging links were built and soldered closed at the bench, and every laurel leaf was finished by hand. The blackening sits in the bone texture and in behind the leaves and was polished back off the raised surfaces, which is what gives a piece this narrow any depth at all.

Style & Wear

A quiet memorial piece for memento mori, cemetery and gothic naturalist baddies.

At 50 mm long and only 5 mm wide she is unusually slender, so she reads as a line rather than a shape. That makes her one of the easiest statement pieces to actually wear. She lengthens the neckline instead of filling it, she sits flat under a collar, and she does not fight a busy layered stack the way a wide pendant does. Wear her long so the drop has somewhere to fall, or short so she reads as a single vertical stroke.

The green variation runs mossier and more botanical and sits happily with gold and warmer metals. The blue runs colder and more solemn, and holds its own against black.

What does One of a Kind mean?
It means exactly what it says. This creation exists once. It will not be remade in this form. Something related may appear later in a different arrangement, but not this exact piece.

There are two pendants here. Which one am I buying?
Whichever variation you select in the options above. One carries a green sapphire, the other a blue. They are two separate creations and each can only be bought once.

What does laurel symbolise?
