Beech is the tree people carve into. Its bark is unusually smooth and grey and it holds a cut for the life of the tree, which is why beech trunks across Europe carry initials, dates and declarations going back generations. A carved beech is a record that keeps growing.

That goes deeper than it sounds. In the Germanic languages, the words for book and beech share a root. Old English bōc meant both. Before paper, beech was a surface you wrote on: thin boards and bark, cut into with a blade. A tree that became a word for a book, because it was the first place words were kept.

So a pendant of beech leaves, with words cut into it in metal, is not an arbitrary pairing.

The technique is the point of this piece. The design is hand engraved, cut into the silver with a graver, and then 24K gold is inlaid into those engraved channels. Inlay is not plating and it is not surface decoration. The channels are cut with undercut walls, and soft pure gold is hammered and burnished down into them until it deforms into the undercut and locks mechanically into the silver. It is held by shape, not by adhesive and not by a bond that can wear through.

It has to be 24K, and that is a material fact rather than a marketing one. Pure gold is soft and endlessly malleable, so it will move into a channel and stay there. Alloyed gold springs back and lifts out. The purity is not for luxury, it is for the join.

This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. Hand engraving and inlay cannot be repeated identically even deliberately.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: shaping, soldering, hand engraving, gold inlay, blackening and polishing.

Every line was cut into the silver by hand with a graver, with no way to correct a cut once made, and the gold was hammered and burnished into those channels by hand afterwards. Both processes are single-attempt work.

Gold against blackened silver is high contrast, so the engraving reads clearly at a distance rather than disappearing into the metal the way an all-silver engraving can.

Because she carries both metals, she does not lock you into one. She sits comfortably in a gold stack and in a silver one, which is unusual and genuinely useful.

She wants directional light. The inlaid lines catch and go dark as you move, which is the whole pleasure of inlay work.

What is gold inlay?
Gold driven into channels cut into another metal, where it is held mechanically by the shape of the channel. The walls are cut with an undercut, and soft gold is hammered and burnished down until it deforms into that undercut and locks. It is a join, not a coating.

How is inlay different from plating?
Completely different. Plating is a microscopically thin layer deposited over the whole surface, and it wears through. Inlay is solid gold physically driven into the metal, sitting flush with the surface and going as deep as the channel does.

Why 24K gold specifically?
Because pure gold is soft and endlessly malleable, so it moves into a channel and stays there. Alloyed gold is springier and lifts back out. The purity is a technical requirement, not a luxury claim.

What does hand engraved mean?
That the lines were cut into the metal by hand with a sharpened steel graver, rather than stamped, cast or machined. Engraving removes metal permanently, so a cut cannot be undone. It is single-attempt work.

Does a chain come with it?
A faux leather cord is included. A sterling silver necklace can be added as an option.

Will the silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On an engraved and inlaid piece it helps, since darker silver makes the gold read more clearly. Clean with a soft brush rather than a cloth, and do not polish aggressively over the inlay.

Can you make me one of these?
