A long blade in recycled sterling silver with a serpent coiled around it, a rough-textured crossguard and an emerald set in the pommel. There is one of her, and she will not be made again this way.

Inspiration & Story

The Dark Sword belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.

A serpent wound around a rod is one of the oldest symbols in the western world, and it means healing. It is the rod of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, and it is still the mark on ambulances and pharmacies and hospital doors. Put the same serpent on a blade and the reading inverts entirely: now it is venom, treachery, the thing that arrives without a sound.

The joke is that both are true. The word pharmakon in ancient Greek meant remedy and poison at the same time, and the difference between the two has always been the dose. A snake on a sword is that idea made into an object, and it does not tell you which one you are holding.

Her crossguard is rough and textured, cast to look worked rather than machined, with the quillons flaring at their ends. The grip is bound the way a leather-wrapped hilt would be. The serpent runs the length of the blade, sculpted with real scale texture and blackened down into it so the body reads as a body rather than a smooth silver ribbon.

The emerald in the pommel is the correct stone for a serpent. Emerald is beryl, the same mineral family as morganite and aquamarine, and it has been associated with snakes for a very long time, partly for the obvious colour reason and partly because the Romans believed looking at green stones rested the eyes. Emerald sits at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, though it is more brittle than that number suggests because of the internal inclusions almost every emerald carries. Those inclusions have their own name in the trade, jardin, French for garden, because that is what they look like inside the stone.

This is the sword for the ones who were always going to be on the villain's side, or at least understood why he did it.

Her sister, The Wild Sword, has antlers for a crossguard and came out of the forest. This one came out from under a rock.

This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. Her sister, The Wild Sword, carries antlers and different stones.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Both stones were set at the bench by us. The serpent's scales were blackened into the texture and polished back across the raised body, which is what makes a snake this narrow read as a snake rather than as a silver line.

Style & Wear

A serpent weapon for fantasy, romantasy and knightcore baddies.

She hangs as a long vertical line, so she lengthens a neckline rather than filling it, and the coiled serpent gives her movement down the length where a plain blade would read as a straight edge.

She wants a longer chain and room to hang. Against black she is a silhouette. Against something pale the serpent reads clearly, which is where she is at her best.

Green against blackened silver is cool and slightly poisonous, which is the intention. She sits well in an all-silver stack and looks deliberately good with dark green and black.

Questions & Answers

What does One of a Kind mean?
It means exactly what it says. This creation exists once and will not be remade in this form. Another sword may appear later with a different guard and different stones, but not this one.

What does a serpent on a sword mean?
Two opposite things at once, which is the point. A serpent coiled around a rod is the rod of Asclepius, the ancient Greek symbol of medicine, still used on ambulances and pharmacies today. What is the crossguard?
The bar across a sword between the blade and the grip, which protects the hand and stops an opponent's blade sliding down onto it. The arms are called quillons.
