Inspiration & Story

Domina Lunae belongs to The Heirloom Vault, our fine jewelry solid gold and diamond work.

The name is Latin for lady of the moon. She carries the same sculpted moon face and eight-pointed star that run through our Curiosity Cabinet collection, the witchy, celestial world of moons, folklore and small strange objects. In solid gold they belong to the Vault, but they came from there, and she is part of a 14K gold celestial set: this ring, the Veritas Lunare pendant and the Veritas Stellare earrings.

The shank is open, and that is the point.

A closed ring has to pass your knuckle to reach the base of your finger. For anyone whose knuckles are larger than the finger below them, that means choosing between a ring you can get on and a ring that stays put. Most people give up and stop wearing rings.

An open shank solves it. Size it once to your hand, and it goes on and off without fighting your knuckle. It also adjusts by half a size, which quietly covers the hot day, the cold morning, the swelling that comes with a long flight or a hard year.

Solid 14K gold is what makes that work. It holds a shape and returns to it, so an open shank stays where it is set. It also does not wear away, which is the difference between a piece you own and a piece you replace. We explain that properly in solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated.

The gemstone is yours to choose. The one shown is a genuine cognac diamond, warm brown and lit from inside, which sits with yellow gold the way no cold stone can.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, benchworking, stone setting and hand finishing.

The moon's face is finished by hand after casting so the features hold their depth, and the stone is set at the bench by us.

She sits low and open, with the moon and star reading clearly from across a table. Because the shank is open she can be worn slightly turned, moon forward or star forward, depending on which half of her you want facing the world.

She stacks well with a plain band, and she pairs with the Veritas Lunare pendant and Veritas Stellare earrings.

Questions & Answers

Why is the shank open?
So the ring can pass a larger knuckle without being too loose at the base of the finger. It also lets the ring adjust by half a size, which covers warm days, cold mornings and the swelling that comes with travel.

Is this good for knuckly fingers?
Yes, that is exactly what it solves. A closed ring has to clear the knuckle to sit properly, which usually means choosing between a ring you can get on and a ring that stays where you put it. An open shank removes that choice.

How much can it be adjusted?
About half a size. Enough for daily variation. Beyond that, order the size that fits, since repeated flexing is not what an open shank is for.

Why does the price go up with ring size?
Because a larger ring contains more gold, and gold is priced by weight. You are paying for the metal that is in your ring rather than an average.

Can I choose a different stone?
Yes. The cognac diamond shown is one option among many. Choose yours at checkout.

What is a cognac diamond?
A natural diamond in a warm brown colour, coloured by structural features formed as the crystal grew. Same mineral and same hardness as a colourless diamond, at 10 on the Mohs scale.

Why 14K gold rather than plated?
Because plating wears through, and solid gold does not. A plated ring is a ring with a deadline. This one does not have one.

What ring sizes do you make?
All of them, made to your size, with no upcharge for being at either end of the scale.

Is there a matching set?
Yes. The Veritas Lunare pendant and the Veritas Stellare earrings carry the same moon and star in 14K gold.

How long does it take?
Between 8 and 12 weeks. Cast, set and finished for you after you order, by two people, by hand.
