Inspiration & Story

The Midnight Guild Banner belongs to the Nox Ex Libris collection, a realm built from books, medieval revival, knightcore and the kind of fantasy you disappear into on purpose.

She is a banner, built properly. The silver field hangs from a horizontal bar and swings on it, which is the whole reason she works: a banner that cannot move is a plate, and a banner that moves is a banner. She turns as you walk and catches light from a different angle every time.

Heraldry was never decoration. A banner told you, from a distance and often before anyone spoke, whose side someone was on. In a period when most people could not read, a field of colour with a mark on it was a functioning identity: who you served, who you were owed by, and who was about to be a problem. Wearing one is a small declaration of allegiance, which is precisely why it belongs in a bookish collection. Everyone who reads deeply has a house, an order, a guild they would have joined.

Hers carries crossed swords with downturned points, framed by an engraved border and a swallowtail edge, with a pear cut sapphire at the centre where a charge would sit.

All of the engraving is done by hand, cut into the metal with a graver, and it carries the variation of a hand rather than a machine. That is deliberate, and it is also historically correct. A real medieval banner was painted or stitched by a person, so no two lines matched exactly and no two banners from the same house were identical. A perfectly uniform line would be the anachronism here. Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, hand engraving, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Every engraved line was cut into the metal by hand with a graver, with no way to correct a cut once made. The banner is built to hang and swing on its bar rather than being fixed flat, and the blackening was worked into the engraved lines and polished back off the surface so the swords read clearly.
