The Essence

Every finger deserves a centerpiece.
This one is blood red.
Ready when you are.

Inspiration & Story

The Drama Queen Ring belongs to Regina, our cathedralcore collection: gothic architecture, cathedral windows and the ceremonial language of medieval regalia.

She is built as an object of presence. Architectural arches rise from the band like miniature tracery, framing the centre stone with deliberate grandeur, and the quatrefoil around the setting comes straight out of gothic window design. The band itself is ribbed, so it reads like a clustered column rather than a plain shank. Nothing about this ring is apologising for taking up space, which is how she got the name.

This one wears a genuine garnet, and red in a cathedral setting is the most historically loaded choice of all of them. Medieval glassmakers made red by adding metallic copper or gold to the melt, and it was so difficult and expensive to get right that red glass was used sparingly and deliberately, reserved for what mattered most in the window. Red was never a background colour in a cathedral. It was the point of the picture.

Garnet behaves the same way. It does not sit bright. It runs deep, still and slightly black at the edges, and then catches a lamp and goes properly red, lit from inside rather than reflecting off the surface. Inside blackened arches, it looks exactly like light coming through old glass rather than new.

Garnet is also the stone that turns up most often in genuine antique mourning jewelry, and it is the January birthstone, so she quietly does two jobs beyond looking like a building.

If you want the wider argument about why this aesthetic is everywhere at the moment, we wrote why cathedralcore is taking over the catwalks and cathedral core, the ultimate guide to its gothic witchy allure. People do use this ring to get engaged, and engagement rings without rules makes that case properly.

Everything is real recycled 925 sterling silver, no plating, no filled, no vermeil, explained in solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated.

Perfect for lovers of cathedralcore and gothic architecture, royalcore, garnet and January birthstones, Victorian mourning jewelry, bookish and dark academia aesthetics, statement rings, alternative engagement rings and handmade sterling silver jewelry.

Three ways to have this ring

This one, now. Size 18.5, genuine garnet, already finished, shipping within 5 working days.

In silver, made to order. Every size, and a long list of stones from zirconia through peridot, amethyst and sapphire to genuine diamond. Made to order takes 8 to 12 weeks.

In solid 14K gold. Same design, same architecture, in a metal that does not need replacing in your lifetime or anyone else's. It is not a better version of this ring. It is a different decision, usually made for a different reason: something you intend to hand on. If that is what you are marking, the gold page is there.

This is a Ready to Send creation. She is a variation of our Drama Queen Ring, made to order, already made in this exact size and stone, so she leaves the atelier as soon as you order her. Want a different size, or an amethyst, peridot, sapphire, black zirconia, diamond? Go to the made to order version and build your own, in any ring size, with an 8 to 12 week production time. The same design in solid 14K gold is here.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, engraving, blackening and polishing.

The design is created entirely in-house, with extensive hand finishing. The blackening was worked into the arches and the ribbed band and polished back off the raised surfaces, which is what gives the architecture its depth instead of leaving it flat.

Style & Wear

A cathedralcore statement for goth, royalcore and dark academia baddies.

The arches give her height on the finger, so she reads as architecture rather than as a stone on a band. She carries a room on her own, and she also stacks well: put a plain band beside her and the arches frame it.

Red against blackened silver is a warm, high-contrast combination, so she sits happily next to gold and mixed metals as well as in an all-silver stack. Garnet also holds its colour under warm indoor light, which is where most people actually see a ring, so she comes alive in exactly the settings a cathedralcore piece belongs in.

Perfect for a proposal that was never going to involve a diamond, a January birthday, a memorial you wear rather than visit, and any day that could do with a cathedral on your hand.

Questions & Answers

What does Ready to Send mean?
It means this exact ring is already made and finished. No production time. She ships within 5 working days instead of the 8 to 12 weeks a made to order piece takes.

What size is this ring?
Size 18.5, and only size 18.5. She is already finished, so this one cannot be made bigger or smaller. Every other size is available through the made to order version.

Can I change the gemstone?
Not on this one. The garnet is already set and cannot be swapped. The made to order version offers a long list of alternatives, from zirconia and peridot through sapphire to genuine diamond.

Is this garnet genuine?
Yes, a genuine natural garnet. We label every stone we set as genuine or synthetic, because those are different things and you deserve to know which one you are buying.

Why does the garnet look almost black sometimes?
Because that is what garnet does. It runs deep and slightly dark at the edges and comes alive under warm light rather than daylight. The blackened arches around it are there to give the red somewhere dark to sit.

Why red in a gothic setting?
Because red glass was the hardest and most expensive colour to make in a medieval window. It needed metallic copper or gold added to the melt, and getting it right was difficult enough that red was used sparingly and deliberately, reserved for what mattered most in the picture. Red was never filler in a cathedral.

Is garnet a birthstone?
Yes, garnet is the birthstone for January.

Is garnet hard enough for daily wear?
Garnet sits around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is fine for regular wear. Over decades of everyday wear it can pick up fine marks on the top facet, which can be repolished. If you want something tougher, sapphire is a 9 and available through the made to order version.

Why is garnet used in mourning jewelry?
Because of the colour and the availability. Deep red held its meaning well in remembrance pieces, and garnet was obtainable across Europe at a price that put it within reach, so it appears in surviving antique mourning jewelry more often than almost any other coloured stone.

What is cathedralcore?
An aesthetic built on gothic ecclesiastical architecture: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, tracery, rose windows and the deliberate verticality of buildings made to draw the eye upward. In our work it is the Regina collection, and it is about the architecture and the grandeur rather than religion.

Can this be used as an engagement ring?
Yes, and it is. There is no rule requiring a diamond solitaire, and that expectation is younger than most people assume.

Can I have this ring in gold?
Yes. The same design exists in solid 14K gold, made to order in your size, with its own list of stones including genuine diamonds. Solid gold does not wear away, so it is generally chosen for something intended to be handed on rather than replaced.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a ring this architectural a little tarnish in the recesses genuinely improves the contrast, because contrast is what makes the arches read. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it.

Is it good for stacking?
Yes, with the right neighbour. The arches sit high, so a plain band beside her works better than another wide ring. Stacked that way she frames the band rather than competing with it.
