Handcrafted Marquise Garnet Stacking Ring in Recycled Sterling Silver with Smoky Quartz | Size 17 | One of a Kind

Three stones. A marquise cut garnet held in a pointed shield of blackened silver, with a smoky quartz set into the band on either side. Red on brown-black, at a scale built for stacking. This ring is a size 17 and the size cannot be altered. There is one of her.

The Essence

Red held in a dark shield.
Smoke on either side.
Small, and not remotely quiet.

Inspiration & Story

Shielded by the Dark belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

The name is the design. The marquise garnet sits inside a pointed shield of blackened silver that comes up around it on all sides, so the red is not sitting out in the open, it is being held in something dark. A shield is a protective form and it reads that way here: the stone is guarded rather than displayed.

A marquise cut is long and pointed at both ends, and it is the shape that makes this ring work at this scale. It runs along the finger rather than across it, so she draws a line instead of a blob, which is why she reads as far more present than 2.76 g of silver has any right to.

The colours are the whole point. Garnet does not behave like a bright red stone. It sits deep and slightly black at the edges and then catches a lamp and goes properly red, lit from inside rather than reflecting off the top. Flanking it, two smoky quartz: brown-black, translucent, the colour of tea held up to a window or resin gone dark with age. Red on smoke on blackened silver is a fully dark palette. Nothing here is softened for daylight.

What she does have is scale. This is the ring you wear on the days you cannot wear a wreath or a beetle: a meeting, a hospital, a family thing, somewhere you would rather not be explaining your jewelry. She goes there and she is still entirely gothic when you look at her. She simply does not announce herself from across a room, which is a different thing altogether from being toned down.

Smoky quartz is worth a word. It is genuine natural quartz, coloured by natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium in the crystal over geological time. Same mineral family as clear quartz and amethyst, just darkened by the ground it grew in.

If you are looking at her as an engagement ring, and people do, engagement rings without rules makes the case properly, and which type of ring suits your hand and finger type is worth reading before deciding whether a 17 is yours. Everything is real recycled 925 sterling silver, no plating, no filled, no vermeil, explained in solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated.

Perfect for lovers of stacking rings, garnet and smoky quartz, goth and corporate goth aesthetics, whimsygoth and witchy design, alternative engagement rings and one of a kind sterling silver rings.

This design can be made for you

This exact ring is one of a kind. The design can be made again as a custom commission with the stones of your choosing, in your size, and in 14K or 18K gold.

She is a particularly good candidate for a custom, because a small ring gets worn constantly. A birthstone in the shield, or three stones that mean three separate things, and you would have it on your hand every day for the next thirty years.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

All three stones were set at the bench by us. A marquise is the least forgiving shape to set, because the two points are where the stone is thinnest and most vulnerable, and the silver has to close over them cleanly without leaving them exposed or burying them. The blackening was worked into the shield and the band texture and polished back off the raised surfaces.

Style & Wear

A dark stacking ring for goth, corporate goth and whimsygoth baddies.

At 2.76 g she is the lightest ring we have made in this group, and she is built for company. Stack her with a plain band, with a wider statement ring, or in a run of three. The marquise runs lengthways along the finger so she sits neatly against a neighbour rather than fighting it, and the shield keeps her profile low enough that she does not catch.

She also works entirely on her own for anyone who wants one ring that goes everywhere.

Red against smoke against blackened silver is warm-toned, so she mixes happily with gold and brass as well as an all-silver stack. Garnet holds its colour under indoor light, which is where most people actually see a ring.

Perfect for a proposal that was never going to involve a diamond, a January birthday, a job that does not know about your Sunday tarot habit, and every ordinary day in between.

Questions & Answers

How many stones are in this ring?
Three. A marquise cut garnet in the shield at the centre, and one smoky quartz set into the band on either side.

What is a marquise cut?
A long, narrow shape pointed at both ends. Set lengthways it runs along the finger rather than across it, which is why a small stone can still read as a strong line on the hand.

Is a marquise hard to set?
It is the least forgiving shape we work with. The two points are where the stone is thinnest and most likely to chip, so the silver has to close over them properly without leaving them exposed or swallowing them. It is the fiddliest part of this ring.

Is smoky quartz a real gemstone?
Yes. Smoky quartz is genuine natural quartz, the same mineral family as clear quartz and amethyst. Its brown-black colour comes from natural irradiation acting on trace aluminium in the crystal over geological time. It sits at 7 on the Mohs scale.

Why does the garnet look almost black sometimes?
Because that is what garnet does. It runs deep and slightly dark at the edges and comes alive under warm light rather than daylight. The blackened shield around it is there to give the red somewhere dark to sit.

Is this ring good for stacking?
It is the best stacker we make. At 2.76 g with a low profile and a marquise running lengthways, she sits against a neighbouring band cleanly instead of competing with it. Wear her with a plain band, with something wider, or in a run of three.

Can I wear it on its own?
Yes, and plenty of people will. She works as a single everyday ring for anyone who wants one thing that goes everywhere.

Can this be used as an engagement ring?
Yes. A centre stone with two smaller ones either side is one of the most traditional engagement structures there is. There is no rule requiring diamonds, and the expectation that there is is younger than most people assume.

Is garnet hard enough for daily wear?
Garnet sits around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is fine for regular wear. Over decades of everyday wear it can pick up fine marks on the top facet, and those can be repolished. The shield setting also protects the points, which is where a marquise is most vulnerable.

What size is this ring, and can it be resized?
Size 17, and only 17. She is one of a kind and already finished, and the two side stones sit in the band itself, so there is no plain metal to cut into without disturbing a setting.

Can I get this design with my own stones?
Yes, through a custom. She is a good one for it, because a ring this size gets worn constantly. Three stones that mean three separate things is a particularly good use of the design. Start at our Custom Realm.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a blackened piece light tarnish only deepens the contrast. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without lifting the blackening, and a soft brush is better than a cloth around the shield.
