She is the quiet one. No wreath, no chamber, no creature. A pear cut garnet in a shaped shield of blackened silver, and two stars, and that is the whole ring. Everything that is not essential has been taken out, which is a harder thing to make than it looks, because there is nowhere for a mistake to hide.

The stars are hand engraved. That distinction matters more than it sounds. A set stone is a component you buy and place. An engraved star is cut directly into the metal with a graver, line by line, and every ray has to run true and meet the others at a single point. A line that wanders is a line that stays. There is no undoing a cut, no filling it, no starting that face again without starting the whole thing again. It is the one technique on our bench where the first attempt is the only attempt.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, hand engraving, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

The stars were cut into the metal with a graver, freehand, which is the only step on this ring with no second attempt available. The blackening was worked into the engraved lines and the shield and polished back off the raised surfaces, which is what makes the stars read as stars rather than as faint scratches.

Are the stars stones or engraving?
Engraving. They are cut into the silver itself with a graver, not set. That is why they sit flush with the metal rather than standing proud of it.

What does hand engraved actually mean?
That the lines were cut into the metal by hand with a sharpened steel tool, one at a time. It is not stamped, not cast, not machined. Every ray of each star had to run true and meet the others at a single point, and a wandering line is permanent. It is the one step on this ring with no second attempt.

Why is that harder than setting a small stone?
Because a stone is a component. You buy it, you seat it, and if a setting goes wrong you can open it and start again. Engraving removes metal, and metal does not come back. There is no filling a cut line and no redoing one face without redoing the whole ring.

Why a pear cut garnet?
Because it points. A pear cut is rounded at one end and pointed at the other, and set upright it runs along the finger, which lengthens the hand and gives the two stars something to sit either side of.

Why does the garnet look almost black sometimes?

No. Engraved lines are cut into the metal rather than sitting on top of it, so they are permanent. The blackening in the lines is what could lighten over many years, and we can reset that for you if it ever does.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a blackened piece like this, light tarnish only deepens the contrast.
