Beneath the rose cut clear quartz at the centre there is a small empty chamber with a crescent moon inside it, wreathed in sculpted leaves, with a blue sapphire set at each shoulder. Look into her and there is a moon in the dark. This ring is a size 18 and the size cannot be altered. There is one of her.

Inspiration & Story

The Dark Moon Shrine belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

She is a reliquary. Not in metaphor, in construction. There is a genuine hollow chamber built under the stone, walled and floored and sealed with quartz on top, and inside it is a crescent moon and nothing else. That emptiness is deliberate. A reliquary is a container made to hold something too significant to leave lying about, and the whole point of one is that it is mostly dark inside.

The name is the meaning. The dark moon is the phase most people call the new moon: the two or three nights when the moon sits between the earth and the sun and is entirely invisible from here. It has not gone anywhere. It is simply unlit. In witchcraft the dark moon is the resting phase, the one for endings, for shedding, for the work you do quietly with nothing to show for it yet. Every other moon phase gets to be looked at. This one just has to be trusted.

So there is a moon in a dark room, and you have to look into the stone to find it. Which is what you do on a dark moon night anyway.

Around all of it, a wreath of sculpted leaves closes in, blackened down in the veining and polished back across the raised surfaces so each leaf keeps its own edge. Botanical and celestial together is not a modern combination. It is straightforwardly how people have thought about growing things for as long as anyone has planted them: sowing, cutting and harvesting by moon phase is old, widespread folk practice, and any kitchen witch with a moon calendar pinned inside a cupboard door is continuing it. Leaves and a moon belong on the same object.

The rose cut quartz is what makes the chamber visible. A rose cut has a flat back and a faceted dome on top, cut the way stones were before modern machinery, so it works like a small clouded window rather than a lens. Light enters, hits the moon below, and returns through a different facet than it came in by. Move your hand and the moon shifts. It fragments, doubles, disappears into shadow and comes back. There is no single fixed view of it, and a photograph cannot really hold it. You have to turn it.

Two blue sapphires sit at the shoulders, prong set and properly night-coloured. Sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, which makes them the toughest thing on the ring by some distance.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, bezel forming, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

A chamber is harder than a solid setting, and slower. The interior has to be finished properly before the stone goes on, because it will be visible forever afterwards and there is no reaching back in. The moon sits at the correct depth to read clearly through the quartz rather than pressing against it or vanishing into shadow, and every leaf in the wreath was finished individually.

The wreath makes her wide across the finger while keeping her low in profile, so she sits flatter than a raised solitaire and is less inclined to catch on a sleeve. The shank narrows toward the back, which keeps her comfortable through a full day.

Size 18, and only 18. She is one of a kind and already finished. The wreath and shoulders occupy most of the band, so there is very little plain metal to work with and resizing would distort the design.

How do I clean it?
Warm water, a drop of washing up liquid, a soft toothbrush around the leaves, dried properly. Keep the top of the quartz clean, because light has to travel through it to reach the moon, and hand cream on the stone dulls the chamber rather than the stone itself. Avoid dip cleaners.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a wreath with this much leaf veining a little tarnish genuinely improves the contrast. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it.
