Inspiration & Story
Nature's Shrine belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.
She is a shrine in the domestic sense. Not the stone kind in a church. The kind that lives in a kitchen: the windowsill where the good jars go, the shelf with the mortar and pestle on it, the hook by the door with rosemary and yarrow hanging upside down to dry. Every kitchen witch has one whether or not she calls it that, and it is almost always the sunniest corner of the room.
The wreath of leaves closes around the centre stone in overlapping layers, blackened down in the veining and polished back across the raised surfaces so each leaf keeps its own edge instead of merging into its neighbours. Wreaths hung over doorways long before anyone called it decor, greenery kept up all year to say the household is protected and something in here is still growing. Two pear quartz sit at the shoulders like buds either side of the flower, clear and pointed and cold against all that green.
Then the part that makes her, which is a thing we deliberately did not do.
The back of the bezel is open. We could have closed it. Closed is faster, stronger, and it hides everything about a stone a jeweller might prefer not to have examined. Instead there is a window cut clean through, so light enters the sapphire from behind rather than only from above.
On your hand she is a deep, herbal, forest green with a rose cut's soft watery glow. Take her off, hold her up to a window, and she is a different stone: the green goes translucent and lit from the inside, the internal structure becomes visible, and you can see straight through her. Anyone who has ever held a jar of infused oil up to the light already knows this exact gesture. Same instinct, same reward.
And it is private. Nobody sees it across a table. You have to take her off and lift her, which means the only person who ever really sees this ring at its best is you.
A rose cut makes it work. Flat back, faceted dome on top, the way stones were cut before modern machinery, so there is no deep pointed pavilion blocking the path. Light goes in the back, through the body of the stone, out through the facets. An old cut and an open setting, and neither does much without the other.
Green sapphire deserves a word. Same mineral as blue sapphire, corundum, coloured green instead. Much less known and considerably less expensive than blue, which has to do with fashion rather than quality. It sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, which matters enormously for a ring on the hands of someone who actually uses her hands: chopping, kneading, digging, repotting, wrist-deep in a sink. This is not a delicate stone.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, bezel forming, stone setting, blackening and polishing.
The bezel was formed around this particular sapphire and its back window cut and cleaned up by hand from both sides, since an opening like that is visible from underneath as well as through the stone. Every leaf in the wreath was finished individually, blackened into the veining and polished back on the raised surfaces so the layers stay separate.

What does an open-backed bezel mean?
It means the metal behind the stone has a window cut through it instead of being solid. Light can enter the sapphire from behind as well as from above. A closed back is faster to make and hides what is inside a stone. An open back shows it.
Why hold the ring up to the light?
Because it becomes a different ring. Worn, the sapphire is a deep herbal green. Held up to a window with light coming through the back, it goes translucent and lit from within and you can see the structure inside the stone. It is not something anyone notices across a table, which is rather the point.
What is a rose cut?

Size 17.5, and only 17.5. She is one of a kind and already finished. The wreath and shoulders occupy most of the band, so there is very little plain metal to work with and resizing would distort the design.
How do I clean it, given the open back?
Warm water, a drop of washing up liquid, a soft toothbrush, and pay attention to the underside. That open window is exactly where hand cream and soap collect, and since light has to travel through it, a dirty back makes the stone look dull for reasons that have nothing to do with the sapphire. Dry it properly afterwards.
Will sterling silver tarnish?
