Inspiration & Story

Midnight Moth belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

She is built on a three stone setting, one of the oldest and most deliberate arrangements in ring making. Traditionally the three are read as past, present and future, which is why the layout appears again and again in engagement and anniversary rings. Here the reading stays and the formality goes: instead of three stones in a neat row, the centre stone sits in prongs and the two sapphires are set into the bodies of the moths themselves, one on each side, so the ring reads as a living thing rather than a formal line.

The stones do something the Crymson Moth version does not. The black zirconia at the centre is matte and flat, and it absorbs light rather than returning it, so it sits on the hand as a genuine dark spot. Then the two blue sapphires flank it and throw light back hard. Dark in the middle, light on either side, which is exactly what a moth's whole existence is about: the dark, and the thing it is flying toward. It is a colder, sharper ring than her red sister, and considerably more nocturnal.

The moths are sculpted with full wing structure, veins and scale texture worked across each wing, and they lift away from the band rather than lying flat on it. Blackening sits down in the wing texture and the raised surfaces were polished back by hand, which is what makes the wings read as wings at this scale rather than collapsing into a grey blur.

Moths move toward light in the dark. That is the whole of their symbolism and it has been read as transformation, as compulsion, and as faith in something you cannot quite see, depending on who is doing the reading.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

All three stones were set at the bench by us. The centre stone is held in prongs closed over it by hand, and each sapphire is seated into the body of its moth. The wing texture was blackened into the veining and polished back across the raised surfaces so the wings hold their depth.

The moths lift away from the band, giving her real presence across the finger while keeping the profile lower than a raised solitaire, so she is less inclined to catch on jumper sleeves. She stacks beautifully with a plain band and the wings frame anything you put beside her.

This is the colder of the two moth rings. A matte black centre against blue sapphire is high contrast and stays sharp in daylight, which suits an all-silver stack and looks deliberately good against black. Her red sister runs warm and comes alive under lamplight instead. Same design, opposite temperature.

Can this be used as an engagement ring?

Can it be resized?
No. The moths sit across a large part of the band and there is very little plain metal to work with, so resizing would distort the design.

Is black zirconia a real stone?
It is a real, properly cut and set stone, and it is synthetic rather than mined. We label it that way every time. Zirconia sits at 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than garnet or amethyst, and coloured zirconia reads convincingly because it is not imitating any specific natural gemstone.

Why is the black stone matte rather than sparkly?
Because that is what it is meant to do here. A black stone that absorbs light rather than throwing it back gives you a genuine dark point on the hand, which is the whole contrast with the two sapphires beside it. Flat black is the correct look, not a dull one.

Is sapphire good for daily wear?
It is one of the best. Sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, so it holds up to being worn every day for decades without scuffing. In this ring both the sapphires and the zirconia are harder than the garnet and quartz in our Crymson Moth version.

What does a moth symbolise?
Transformation, and moving toward light in the dark. It has also been read as compulsion, and as faith in something you cannot quite see. All three fit a ring with a dark centre and light on either side.

Will the blackening wear off?
The blackening sits down in the wing veining where nothing rubs, so it is durable. Raised areas will brighten over years of wear, which most people prefer, since the contrast that develops becomes yours. We can reset it if you ever want it back to new.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a ring with this much wing texture a little tarnish genuinely improves the contrast. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it.

Is there another version of this ring?
