A section of gothic window, built in recycled sterling silver. Pierced quatrefoils, a ribbed arch, crocketed edges and a marquise cut garnet burning red where the glass would be. The bail is hidden on the reverse, so nothing interrupts the architecture from the front. There is one of her, and she will not be made again this way.

Inspiration & Story

Basilica Cruor belongs to Regina, our cathedralcore collection, and she is about as pure an example of it as we have made. No creature, no botanical, no folklore. Just architecture, and the one red thing in the middle of it.

The name is Latin and it is not subtle. Basilica, the church. Cruor, which is not the polite word for blood. It means shed blood, gore, the kind that has left the body. Blood in a church. Which is, if you think about what a cathedral was built to commemorate, entirely on theme.

Everything about her is real gothic vocabulary. The pierced four-lobed shapes are quatrefoils, one of the defining motifs of gothic tracery, cut clean through so you see whatever is behind her. The curved bar sweeping across is a ribbed arch, drawn as an ogee, the double curve that goes concave then convex and gives late gothic its particular restlessness. The small hooked leaves running along the outer edges are crockets, which climbed spires and gables on real buildings. The thin bars dividing the openings are mullions, and they terminate in finials.

That is not decoration borrowed from architecture. It is architecture, at 44 mm.

And she is open. The quatrefoils are pierced right through, which means what shows through them is whatever you are wearing: black knit, bare skin, a white collar. She changes with the surface behind her the way a window changes with the weather. It also means she is far lighter to wear than her size suggests, because most of her is absence.

The marquise cut garnet sits low in the tracery, in the position a jewelled boss or a fragment of ruby glass would occupy. A marquise is long and pointed at both ends, which is the only shape that fits between mullions without fighting them, and garnet is the correct red for this. Not bright, not pink. Deep, still and slightly black at the edges, exactly like light coming through old glass rather than new. Garnet is also all over genuine antique mourning jewelry, so she carries that history too.

The bail is hidden on the reverse, which is a deliberate awkwardness on our part. A bail on the front would interrupt the top line of the tracery and immediately turn a building into a pendant. Putting it on the back means the silhouette stays whole and she reads as a piece of architecture that happens to be hanging on you. This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. Another window may appear one day, a different arch, a different stone, but not this one.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, piercing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

Every quatrefoil is pierced right through and cleaned up by hand from both sides, which is the fiddly part, because an opening this small shows every rough edge from the back as well as the front. The blackening sits in the recesses and along the mullions and was polished back off the raised surfaces, and the prongs were closed over the garnet at the bench by us.

At 44 x 23 mm she has proper presence, but at 6.5 g she is far lighter than she looks, because so much of her is pierced away. That combination is rare and it is why she wears comfortably all day despite reading as a statement.

Wear her against something plain and let the quatrefoils do the work. Black knitwear turns the openings into voids. A white shirt turns them into windows. Bare skin turns them into something warmer and considerably more suggestive. She is a genuinely different piece depending on what is behind her.

She wants a chain rather than a cord, and she wants to hang alone. This is not a layering piece. She is architecture, and buildings need space around them.

Questions & Answers

What does One of a Kind mean?
It means exactly what it says. This creation exists once. It will not be remade in this form. Another window may appear later with a different arch and a different stone, but not this one.

What is a quatrefoil?
A four-lobed shape, like four overlapping circles, and one of the defining motifs of gothic architecture. You find them in window tracery, on screens, in floor tiles and carved into stonework across almost every gothic cathedral in Europe. Here they are pierced right through the silver.

What is tracery?
The stone framework that divides a gothic window into sections and holds the glass. The bars are mullions, the shapes at the top are the tracery proper, and the whole system exists because gothic builders wanted enormous windows and needed a way to support that much glass.

What are the little hooks along the edges?
Crockets. Small carved leaf forms that run up the edges of spires, gables and pinnacles on gothic buildings. They are one of the fastest ways to tell gothic from any other architectural style.

What is cathedralcore?
An aesthetic built on gothic ecclesiastical architecture: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, tracery, rose windows and the deliberate verticality of buildings made to draw the eye upward. In our work it is the Regina collection, and it is about the architecture and the grandeur rather than religion.

What does Basilica Cruor mean?
Latin. Basilica is the church. Cruor is blood, specifically shed blood, the unpolite word for it. Blood in a church, which given what cathedrals were built to commemorate is fairly on the nose.

Why is the bail on the back?
Because a bail on the front would cut across the top of the tracery and instantly turn a building into a pendant. Hiding it on the reverse keeps the silhouette whole. It is more work and it is the reason she reads the way she does.

Is she heavy?
No, and that surprises people. At 6.5 g she is much lighter than her 44 mm suggests, because so much of her is pierced away. Openwork is the reason gothic buildings could get so tall and it works the same way here.

Why a marquise cut garnet?
Shape and colour. A marquise is long and pointed at both ends, which is the only shape that sits between mullions without fighting them. And garnet is the right red: deep, still and slightly black at the edges, like light through old glass rather than new. It is also the stone that turns up most often in genuine antique mourning jewelry.

Is garnet hard enough to wear?
Garnet sits around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, which is fine for regular wear. As a pendant it has an easier life than a ring, since it is not being knocked against door frames and keyboards all day.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately, and we would suggest a chain over a cord for this one.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a piece this architectural, tarnish in the recesses genuinely improves it, because contrast is what makes tracery read. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening it, and a soft brush is better than a cloth here, since a cloth cannot reach into pierced openings.
