Handcrafted Gothic Cathedralcore Beetle Pendant in Recycled Sterling Silver with Blue Sapphire and Champagne Zirconia | One of a Kind

A cathedral hidden inside a beetle, in recycled sterling silver. Her wing cases lift and her flight wings open to reveal gothic tracery worked across the body beneath, arched and scrolled like vaulting seen from below. Set with a blue sapphire and champagne zirconia. There is one of her, and she will not be made again this way.

The Essence

A beetle named ruler.
Wings open, cathedral underneath.
Armour that opens into architecture.

Inspiration & Story

Dynastinae Cathedrale belongs to Regina, our cathedralcore collection: gothic architecture, arches, tracery and the particular grandeur of a building designed to make you look up. She reaches sideways into the Curiosity Cabinet for her natural history, which is unusual for us and entirely deliberate.

The name is real classification. Dynastinae is the subfamily of rhinoceros beetles, and it comes from the Greek dynastes, meaning ruler or lord. Entomologists looked at an armoured beetle with a horn on its head and named it after sovereignty. Regina means queen. She was halfway into this collection before we touched her.

Then keep the elytra paragraph as written, and replace the paragraph beginning "Rhinoceros beetles are also genuinely, absurdly strong" with:

The architecture is the reason she exists. Under raised elytra you get a hidden vaulted interior, ribbed and arched, and it looks uncannily like the underside of a cathedral ceiling. Gothic builders spent centuries working out how to hold a vast roof up on the least possible material, arriving at ribs, arches and load carried outward instead of straight down. A beetle solved the same problem long before anyone drew a flying buttress: a hard curved shell over a hollow space, strong out of all proportion to its weight. Regina is architecture you can wear, and this time the architect had six legs.

Rhinoceros beetles are also genuinely, absurdly strong. You will see it claimed everywhere that they lift 850 times their own body weight, and that number is not well supported by anything measured properly. The real figures are lower and still remarkable, several dozen times their own mass, which no animal our size comes close to. We would rather give you the honest number than the viral one. Their horn, incidentally, is not for defence. It is for shoving rival males off branches.

She is set with a blue sapphire at the centre where the head meets the body, and champagne zirconia worked into the wing cases, warm against the cool blue. The tracery is blackened into its recesses and polished back across the raised surfaces by hand, which is the only way that much detail reads at 35 mm. If you want the wider argument about where gothic jewelry is going and why it is not staying in one lane, we wrote the future of goth in 2026. Everything is real recycled 925 sterling silver, no plating, no filled, no vermeil, explained properly in solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated, and if you want to get good at reading listings there is how to spot genuinely ethically made handcrafted jewelry.

Perfect for lovers of cathedralcore and gothic architecture, church and vaulting symbolism, beetle and entomology jewelry, natural history design, curiosity cabinets and one of a kind sterling silver jewelry.

This is a One of a Kind creation. There is one of her and she will not be made again in this form. Another beetle may appear one day, with different stones, caught at a different moment, but not this one.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

The tracery beneath the wings was blackened into its recesses and polished back across the raised surfaces by hand, and every stone was set at the bench by us. She is substantial at 9.5 g, which you feel when you pick her up and which is exactly right for a beetle built like a tank.

Style & Wear

A proper statement piece for cathedralcore, gothic architecture and entomology baddies.

At 35 x 28 mm and 9.5 g she is the most physically present pendant in the collection, wide as well as tall and with real weight to her, so she wants a substantial chain rather than a fine one. Give her space. She is the anchor of a stack, not a supporting piece, and she looks best where the tracery under the wings can actually be seen rather than buried under a collar.

Warm champagne against cool blue means she does not lock you into a single metal, so she mixes happily with gold as well as silver.

Perfect for a market you got dressed up for, a museum you lost four hours in, the person who has a beetle under glass on the shelf, and any occasion that calls for wearing something with architecture inside it.

Questions & Answers

What does One of a Kind mean?
It means exactly what it says. This creation exists once. It will not be remade in this form. Another beetle may appear later with different stones, but not this one.

What does Dynastinae mean?
It is the scientific subfamily of rhinoceros beetles, from the Greek dynastes, meaning ruler or lord. The beetle was named after sovereignty long before it met a collection called Regina.

What are the hard shells on a beetle's back?
Elytra. They are the front pair of wings, hardened into armoured cases that protect the body and the folded flight wings underneath. When a beetle flies, the elytra lift out of the way and the real wings unfold. That is the moment this pendant is caught in.

What is cathedralcore?
An aesthetic built on gothic ecclesiastical architecture: pointed arches, ribbed vaults, tracery, rose windows, the deliberate verticality of a building made to make you look up. In our work it is the Regina collection, and it is about the architecture and the grandeur rather than religion.

Can rhinoceros beetles really lift 850 times their body weight?
No, and it is worth saying so, because that figure is repeated constantly online without a source behind it. Careful measurement puts the real number considerably lower, in the range of several dozen times their own mass. Still extraordinary, still nothing a human comes near, just not the viral number.

What is the horn for?
Fighting other males. Rhinoceros beetles use the horn to lever and shove rivals off branches in competition over mates. It is not a defensive weapon.

Why is there a cathedral under the wings?
Because the structure is genuinely the same idea. Raised elytra create a hidden vaulted space, ribbed and arched, very close to the underside of a cathedral ceiling. Gothic builders spent centuries learning how to hold up an enormous roof on as little material as possible. A beetle had already solved it. This is Regina, our cathedralcore collection, arriving from an unexpected direction.

Is champagne zirconia a real stone?
It is a real, properly cut and set stone, and it is synthetic rather than mined. We label it that way every time. Zirconia sits at 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than garnet or amethyst, and coloured zirconia reads convincingly precisely because it is not imitating a specific gemstone.

What does a beetle symbolise?
Transformation and persistence, most commonly, and in some traditions protection. Beetles have been worn as jewelry and amulets for thousands of years, the Egyptian scarab being the most famous example.

Is this suitable for someone who collects entomology?
It was more or less made for them. The elytra, the flight wings and the horn are all built as they actually are on the animal, and it takes the beetle seriously as a structure rather than treating it as a cute bug shape.

How does a 9.5 g pendant wear?
Substantially, and you feel it. She wants a chain with some body to it rather than a fine one. She is a statement piece rather than a daily background piece.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately, and we would suggest a heavier one for this piece.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a piece with this much tracery, a little tarnish in the recesses genuinely improves the contrast. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening the detail.
