Handcrafted Witchy Salt Shaker Pendant in Recycled Sterling Silver with Clear Quartz | Limited Edition

Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder.

A tiny sterling silver salt shaker, crowned with a gallery setting and a clear quartz cabochon. Made to order in a limited edition of five, and then never again.

The Essence

"There are some things I know for certain: always throw spilled salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for luck, and fall in love whenever you can."

Inspiration & Story

A Luck Spell belongs to the Curiosity Cabinet collection, a realm built from witchcraft, folklore, natural oddities and the strange beauty of things we keep.

Always throw spilt salt over your left shoulder. Not the right. The left.

This is one of the oldest superstitions still in daily use, and most people who do it could not tell you why. The reasoning is beautifully specific: bad luck was said to wait behind your left shoulder, and salt was precious enough that spilling it was an offence worth answering for. So you throw a pinch backwards, over the left, straight into the eyes of whatever is standing there. It is a small, silly, entirely automatic act of protection that people still perform in kitchens across the world without thinking about it.

That is exactly the kind of magic this piece is about. Not ceremony. Not robes. The everyday domestic kind that lives in a kitchen, gets passed between women, and works whether or not you believe in it.

Yes, this one is an ode. If you know a certain film about two sisters, a kitchen and a house full of practical, domestic, midnight magic, you already know why a salt shaker earns a place around someone's neck.

She is shaped as a small salt shaker, sitting somewhere between an antique cruet and a reliquary. The upper collar is worked with detail, and the body is topped with a hand-formed gallery setting, that crown of tiny silver beads and arches around the stone. Gallery settings are properly old-fashioned to make. Each little arch is formed and soldered rather than cast in, and it is the reason she reads Victorian rather than modern.

Inside sits a clear quartz cabochon, domed and unfaceted, which was very deliberate. Faceted stones throw light outward. A cabochon holds it. It looks like the shaker is full, catching light the way coarse salt does in a jar on a windowsill.

She is made in our own atelier in the Netherlands, in real recycled 925 sterling silver. No plating, no filled, no vermeil. If you want the honest breakdown of what those words mean and what the cheap versions look like after six months, we wrote solid gold vs gold filled vs vermeil vs gold plated, and there is a guide on how to spot genuinely ethically made handcrafted jewelry if you want to get properly good at reading listings.

She sits squarely in the warm end of whimsygoth, the domestic end, the one that lives in kitchens rather than crypts. And if you want the version of this story that goes the other way, into remembrance and mortality, what memento mori actually means is the other half of the Curiosity Cabinet.

Perfect for lovers of whimsygoth and whimsigoth aesthetics, kitchen witch style, folklore jewelry, clear quartz, 90s witch aesthetics and witchy sterling silver jewelry.

This is a Limited creation. Five will be made in total, each one to order, and once those five are spoken for the design is retired. She will not return in this form. She is made after you order, by hand, which is why the production time matches our made to order creations.

Crafted using in-house digital and traditional techniques: 3D designing, 3D printing, casting, sawing, shaping, soldering, gallery setting, stone setting, blackening and polishing.

The gallery crown is built and closed over the stone by hand on every single one, which means no two of the five will be perfectly identical.

Style & Wear

A small folklore talisman for whimsygoth, kitchen witch and everyday-magic baddies.

She is compact, so she works as an everyday piece rather than a statement. Wear her alone on a short chain where people have to lean in to work out what she is, or layer her into a stack with lockets, moons and whatever else you have collected. She has real dimension to her, so she looks best where she can turn and catch light rather than lying flat.

Perfect for kitchen witches, people who genuinely do throw the salt, anyone building a collection of small strange objects, and a gift for the friend who reads your cards.

Questions & Answers

Why do you throw salt over your left shoulder?
Folklore held that bad luck waited behind your left shoulder, and salt was valuable enough that spilling it was considered an offence. Throwing a pinch backwards over the left was a way of throwing it directly at whatever was standing there. The right shoulder was said to be the good side, so you leave that one alone.

Does it have to be the left shoulder?
According to the superstition, yes. The left is the unlucky side. That specificity is most of the charm of it.

Does this pendant open? Can I put real salt in it?
No. She is shaped as a salt shaker but she is a solid pendant, not a functioning vessel. The clear quartz is set permanently in the gallery crown.

What does Limited mean?
Five will be made, and then the design is retired. Each one is made to order after you buy it, so you are not competing for stock on a shelf. When the fifth is claimed, this design is finished.

Will you make more if they sell out?
No. Retired means retired. Something else may appear from the same corner of the Curiosity Cabinet later, but not this.

What is a gallery setting?
The decorative crown of small silver beads and arches you can see holding the stone. It is an old technique, built and soldered by hand rather than cast in one piece, and it is what gives the piece its antique, Victorian look.

What is a cabochon?
A stone that is polished into a smooth dome rather than cut with facets. Cabochons hold light inside themselves instead of throwing it outward, which is why this one glows rather than sparkles.

Is clear quartz a real gemstone?
Yes. Clear quartz is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, which keeps it affordable, but it is genuine natural stone. It sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, so it stands up perfectly well to daily wear.

Does clear quartz mean anything?
In crystal traditions it is usually described as clarity and amplification, the all-purpose stone. Here it was chosen for how it looks more than what it is said to do: domed and cloudy-clear, it reads exactly like coarse salt catching the light.

Does a chain come with this pendant?
Not as standard. The price is for the pendant, which arrives with a faux leather cord. A sterling silver chain can be added as an option or bought separately.

Will sterling silver tarnish?
Yes, all sterling silver does. Normal reaction to air and skin, not a fault. On a piece with this much surface detail, a little tarnish in the recesses actually improves her. Your upkeep document explains how to clean her without flattening that contrast.

How long will it take?
Between 8 and 12 weeks. She is cast, built, set and finished specifically for you after you order, by two people, by hand.
